The B-26 Marauder 'Fifinalla' of 391st BG, 9th AF, flown by Lt. Clark Tavener was shot down by Fw190s of JG3 about 3 miles east of Ahrweiler, 23 December 1944, on a mission against the Ahrweiler railway viaduct. She plunged to earth with the right engine on fire. Only two of the crew parachuted to safety, the rest of the crew including the pilot were killed. Fifinella had flown 109 combat missions.
The background B-26 'Silver Dollar' failed to return, too. The crew bailed out due to fire in bomb bay with the Navigator John Adair the only survivor.
This scene is somewhat special for me as I went to school in Ahrweiler and grew up near by. This artwork wouldn't be possible without Adam Toobys great Marauder model and Gareth Hectors Fw190. Textures by me. Hope you like it!
There are great sources regarding the B-26 formation on this day, position of each plane and which went down on this mission.

At asisbiz you can find which German pilot of JG3 shot down a Marauder this day. The only missing link is which German aircraft was piloted by whom. But these were the markings of JG 3 at this time.
