Sturm over the Alps

On 18 July 1944 Hptm. Wilhelm Moritz led his Fw190 A-8s of IV.(Sturm)/JG3 against a sizeable formation of B-17 Flying Fortresses of 483rd Bomb Group, 15th Air Force over Innsbruck. The attack was a rather disjointed affair instead of the arrowhead formation but decimating nevertheless. The Sturmböcke were credited with 37 bombers destroyed and Moritz' single kill depicted here took his total to 41. In the end the 483rd BG lost 14 B-17s that day.
