Battle of Britain - Hardest Day

August 18, 1940, described as the Hardest Day of the Battle of Britain. Hurricanes of 501 Squadron took off from the Hawkinges airfield close to Folkestone. On this day III./JG 26 was led by the 9th Staffel commander, Gerhard Schöpfel. Schöpfel bounced the climbing Hurricanes alone and managed to shoot down four of them. Three pilots (Plt. Off Kozlowski, Plt. Off Bland, Sgt. Don McKay) had been shot down in rapid succession, none having time to call out even a warning to the rest of the formation, let alone take evasive action or fire their own guns. Pilot Officer Kenneth "Hawkeye" Lee was the last to fall
